The coastline of West Cork is widely recognised as being one of the most spectacular sailing grounds in the world. Now, along with being a world-class sailing location, the West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre has put West Cork on the map for having one of the finest world-class facilities for amateur, and now for professional sail and powerboat training.

West Cork Sailing was established in 1998 by an adventurous couple, Niall and Gail MacAllister, in the old mailboat shed by the pier and slipway on the edge of Adrigole Harbour, which were then disused. Niall and Gail have many years experience in running sailing centres in the UK and France and Niall is one of the ISA’s (Irish Sailing Association)and RYA’s (Royal Sailing Association) top dinghy sailing and power boating instructors in addition to being a yachtmaster instructor. Their combined talents and hard work have built the West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre into one of the most professionally run centres in Ireland, with a reputation for high standards of safety and training but with a huge element of fun and adventure which this couple generously share with all their clients. The centre now boasts a fleet of 50 boats and a purpose built training centre and last year launched a Professional Maritime Training product on the global sailing market.

The sailing activity in the harbour has encouraged local communities to appreciate and make use of one of the natural resources on their doorstep, and consequently a myriad of supporting tourism based businesses are being established. The harbour and pier, which were rarely used before the centre was established, has also now become a central focus for outdoor activities for the local people who enjoy fishing, sailing, water skiing and swimming in the beautiful bay. The pier and surrounding area has been restored by Cork County Council and is regularly maintained. The population of Adrigole is less than 500 and the growth of the West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre has been very instrumental in impacting the development of facilities and services now available in the area.

Each year Gail and Niall reinvest in their business to provide clients with the latest industry standard boats, facilities, technology and training for all their instructors. New products and packages are also introduced to meet the changing requirements of the industry and the global market and most importantly, the desires of their customers.
